Engineering next-generation CAR T cells for blood cancer

Project details

CAR T cell therapy has transformed the treatment of blood cancers, producing remarkable clinical responses in patients. However, many patients still relapse or experience severe toxicities, highlighting the need for safer and more effective CAR designs.

This project will explore a novel split CAR T cell platform that separates key signalling components into distinct receptor modules to better control T cell activation. Using protein engineering and structural biology approaches, the student will investigate how CAR architecture influences signalling and anti-tumour function to improve the safety and efficacy of CAR T cell therapy.

This project is ideal for students interested in immunology, structural biology and cancer research. Students will gain experience in molecular cloning, mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry and functional immune assays.

About our research group

The Call Lab investigates how protein structure and molecular engineering can be harnessed to develop next-generation immunotherapies for cancer. Our research combines structural biology, protein design and immunology to engineer improved CAR T cells with enhanced efficacy and safety for patients with blood cancers.

Located within the Molecular Science Division at WEHI, our team includes postdoctoral researchers, research assistants and students with diverse backgrounds, including structural biologists and immunologists. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities and expertise spanning protein engineering, cell biology and translational immunology, providing opportunities to develop a broad range of experimental skills while contributing to innovative cancer research.
