First diagnosed in 2009 at 42, Dani faced a gruelling 18 months of operations, tests and treatments. The diagnosis was a shock, dramatically altering her life and that of her young family. In 2019 she received the devastating news that her breast cancer had returned. However, this time she witnessed firsthand the advancements in medical procedures and drugs. “The new cold cap therapy helped me retain most of my hair, and improved medications minimised nausea, allowing me to function more normally,” she recalls.
During treatment, Dani found herself asking, ‘how can we change things for the better?’ This question led to the creation of The Nipple Effect, a fundraising initiative dedicated to raising money and awareness for breast cancer research. Inspired by a nurse’s recommendation, Dani began supporting WEHI’s breast cancer lab, led by Professor Jane Visvader and Professor Geoff Lindeman. Her first fundraising event, a high tea in November 2019, raised $6500.
Two other major events have followed, ‘A Night by the Bay’ and ‘Soiree by The Bay’, drawing over 120 guests and raising substantial funds for WEHI’s breast cancer research through ticket sales, raffles and auctions. Despite COVID-19″ ”challenges, the 2023 and 2024 events have raised a combined $24,000.
Dani’s hands-on involvement, including meeting researchers and touring their labs, deepened her appreciation of their work and solidified her commitment.
Dani acknowledges the support of her husband Mark and her best friend Sue, who stood by her side through every step. Family and friends rallied around Dani, providing much-needed support during her treatments. “My children are the reason I get up each day, wanting to be part of their future,” she says.
Looking forward, Dani’s outlook is bright. “I prioritise my health and do things to maintain a positive mind and body,” she says. She plans to travel to Italy next year and enjoys
daily walks on the beach with her dog, swimming and body surfing. Spending time with family, sharing an Aperol spritz, is one of her favourite pastimes.
Dani’s journey reminds us that in the face of adversity, strength can be found in community and purpose. Her dedication serves as a powerful example of transforming personal challenges into collective action, driving meaningful change. Through The Nipple Effect, Dani continues to inspire and mobilise communities towards the goal of finding a cure for breast cancer.”
