Summer ‘25

Learn about how collaboration leads to discovery in the Summer edition of Illuminate.

From the director

We recently welcomed business leader and philanthropist John Dyson as the new President of the WEHI Board. A long-standing member of our Board, John brings deep expertise in innovation, governance and philanthropy.

His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for WEHI, building on the extraordinary legacy of Jane Hemstritch AO. Over 12 years of leadership – including seven as President – Jane shaped the institute in profound and lasting ways. We thank her for her vision,
generosity and unwavering commitment to medical research.

We’re also proud to announce the formation of WEHI’s first Independent Scientific Advisory Board, bringing together renowned global leaders to help guide our future direction.

An emerging technology that will shape the future of health is mRNA medicine. From our new partnership with Moderna to a new malaria vaccine candidate, researchers are helping unlock the full potential of this transformative technology. These advances show the power of sector partnerships in accelerating progress.

This spirit of innovation and long-term vision is also reflected in our celebration of 50 years of parasitology at WEHI. What began as a bold idea has grown into a globally recognised program that continues to shape how we understand and fight infectious diseases. It’s a powerful reminder of what sustained investment in science can achieve.
