Dr. Brent Ryan’s research focuses on identifying the earliest cellular changes that occur in Parkinson’s disease and developing robust assays to measure these processes. His work aims to uncover novel disease mechanisms and establish platforms for high-throughput phenotypic and target-based drug discovery. His research combines human stem cell-derived neuronal models with advanced imaging, functional genomics and molecular approaches to investigate how genetic and environmental factors influence neuronal health and vulnerability. He has developed novel image-based profiling methods for studying cellular and organelle function and applies these approaches to identify mechanisms relevant to neurological disease and potential therapeutic targets. Based at the University of Oxford, his research is highly collaborative, spanning neuroscience, cell biology, genetics, imaging and drug discovery, with collaborations across Oxford and with national and international academic and translational partners.
