Initially this image looks like a colourful mosaic. But each shape represents a different cell within the small intestine, revealing a hidden world that plays a vital role in coeliac disease. Like pieces in a puzzle, these cells work together in ways that can trigger harmful immune responses to gluten, driving inflammation and damage in the gut.

Using advanced spatial omics technology, researchers can map these cellular neighbourhoods in unprecedented detail and see how they change as the disease develops.

Coeliac disease affects more than 370,000 Australians and often goes undiagnosed, leaving many people at risk of serious health complications. By uncovering how cell organisation shapes disease, this research could lead to earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments beyond a lifelong gluten-free diet.
