Getting on my Nerves

Created | 2026

Deep within the brain, human brain cells, called neurons, play a critical role in movement and coordination.

Ria’s image shows a network of dopamine-producing neurons in the midbrain, captured as part of her work investigating why Parkinson’s disease causes some of these cells to die prematurely. Understanding these processes helps us uncover the biological mechanisms behind Parkinson’s and explore potential therapeutic avenues that may help save these crucial brain cells.

Parkinson’s disease is the world’s fastest growing neurological condition and there are currently no medicines or therapies to stop its progression. The need for research to find a way to halt the disease becomes more urgent as each year passes.
