Bridging Borders, Inspiring Futures

At WEHI, we believe that science thrives when ideas cross borders – this vision is shared by the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations. The Foundation’s commitment to fostering collaboration has not only strengthened ties between Australia and China but has also advanced biomedical research that benefits global health.

Over the last five years, the Foundation has been a cornerstone supporter of WEHI’s International Student Program in Research Experience (InSPIRE), a 10-week funded internship that brings high-achieving undergraduate students from leading universities across Asia to Melbourne for hands-on research experience.

InSPIRE: Bridging Cultures Through Science

The InSPIRE program is more than a research internship – it’s a cultural and academic bridge between Australia and Asia. Students from top institutions across China, Singapore, India, Japan and South Korea are selected to participate. These students experience cutting-edge research at laboratories at WEHI and partner institutions across Melbourne.

During their internship, students gain research experience, attend lectures by leading scientists, engage in social and cultural activities, and live with host families – immersing themselves in Melbourne’s vibrant community and experiencing first-hand Australia’s history, culture and values.

Strategic Support for Practical Cooperation

The National Foundation for Australia-China Relations’ commitment to fostering cultural exchange, international cooperation, and scientific excellence has strengthened people-to-people links in the Australian and Chinese biomedical sectors.

Over the last five years, the Foundation has funded 50 InSPIRE scholarships for students from eight leading universities in mainland China and Hong Kong, as well as a 2021 virtual Bioinformatics masterclass, a 2022 virtual research symposium and research exchange visits. These initiatives have strengthened ties between Australian and Chinese institutions, resulting in ongoing collaborations, co-publications in top journals, and the joint development of new drug treatments.

The Foundation’s support has been instrumental in expanding the reach and impact of InSPIRE. In addition to financial support, the Foundation’s endorsement has elevated the program’s visibility and underscored its diplomatic and educational significance, garnering support from bodies including the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Melbourne, and the Australian Consulate General in Hong Kong.

Impact Beyond the Lab

The ripple effect of The Foundation’s support is felt far beyond the laboratory. At the end of their InSPIRE internship, almost all students stated that they would recommend the program to their friends and colleagues, and would now consider pursuing higher studies in Australia.

InSPIRE alumni serve as ambassadors for Australian science and culture, fostering long-term collaborations between institutions and countries.

“This internship has been a truly memorable chapter of my life. I not only gained valuable research experience, but also discovered a new perspective on life — Melbourne is such a beautiful city, and I deeply enjoyed living and learning here.

It has made me realize that there are many possibilities for my future, and I now feel strongly motivated to return to Melbourne for my PhD studies.
– Jixin Yang from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)

“My experience at WEHI and in Melbourne was truly remarkable. The lab had a very positive and collaborative atmosphere, and all the members were extremely supportive. During the 10 weeks, I gained valuable knowledge and skills through both research and daily interactions. A variety of academic and social activities, such as the division retreat and football games, made my time at WEHI both enriching and enjoyable.

Beyond work and study, our host family provided us with a comfortable and memorable living experience in Melbourne. Overall, it was an unforgettable opportunity that I deeply appreciate, and I would highly recommend this program to others in the future.”
– Di Wu from Zhejiang University

Looking Ahead

Through the Foundation’s support, WEHI has continued to advance Australia’s excellence in biomedical science, and is shaping a future where global cooperation drives discovery, and where young scientists from across Asia and Australia work side by side to tackle the world’s most pressing health challenges.

“The InSPIRE program is often a student’s first experience of life in a laboratory and lays the foundation for long-term relationships with future biomedical research leaders. These generational connections will underpin international scientific cooperation that will be key to tackling health challenges that affect us all.”

Join us in shaping the future of global biomedical research

The InSPIRE program is generously supported by philanthropic, academic and government contributions, enabling students to participate regardless of their financial circumstance. Students receive stipends covering travel, accommodation, and living expenses, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder participation.

We invite you to support the InSPIRE program and invest in the next generation of scientific leaders.
