A gift to help make the world a better place

Lyn Mather

At 83, Lyn Mather is at a stage in life when you’re often asked to do your forward care plan and write your Will. Lyn said she had never thought of leaving a gift in her Will before.

“I’ve never had much money, but there’s no reason why I couldn’t leave a bequest; it’s something that anybody could do.”

Why choose WEHI?

Lyn’s had a very interesting life – continuing to have it actually – but it’s not been an easy one. Although she didn’t have much schooling, Lyn’s always had a very enquiring mind and read scientific publications. She feels it’s so important for people of her age to look at the scientific advancements that are being made now.

It’s not her late husband’s many illnesses, nor the Parkinson’s disease in her own family that inspired her to leave a gift in her Will to WEHI.

For Lyn, WEHI itself is the great attraction. “It’s the fact that these amazing people can look at so many things with a fine eye,” Lyn says. She is full of awe at what is being achieved at WEHI.

As Lyn describes it, she isn’t bequeathing a great amount, but having not had much herself, she knows what a difference even a small amount can make.

“You know how every little bit helps? Well, this is my little bit and it comes from the heart”, said Lyn.

“I’m overjoyed to think that instead of saying, ‘I wish I had’, I’ve actually done something. I like to think that there are people coming behind me who are going to benefit.

“I’m telling my story because it’s important to show that this is something that anybody can do. You don’t have to be wealthy. I feel as if I’m helping WEHI to help everybody; to make the world a better place.
