"This AI Is Bananas" is a hands-on workshop exploring how Claude and Copilot fit into everyday research and reporting work, using banana price data as a deliberately low-stakes way to practice real skills. Attendees will search for and critique a genuine scientific paper, build interactive charts with AI assistance, and learn a practical framework for handling sensitive research data safely. Rather than hype or scepticism, the session focuses on what these tools do well, where they potentially fall short, and how to verify their output before trusting it. Judgement stays with the researcher; the tools just get you there faster.
Dr Kerry Mullan is a Senior Bioinformatician in the Papenfuss Lab at the Snow Centre for Immune Health, WEHI, where she leads the multi-omics analysis pipeline for a primary Sjögren’s syndrome cohort study. She holds a PhD in Immunology from Monash University and completed postdoctoral training in Belgium, developing computational tools for T cell biology. Kerry is the developer of STEGO.R, TCR_Explore, and ggVolcanoR — open-source tools spanning single-cell annotation, T cell receptor repertoire exploration via unsupervised (k-means) clustering, and differential expression visualisation.
