Pancreatic cancer is becoming a critical public health challenge and growing service issue. It is estimated that pancreatic cancer will be the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally by 2030. To address this issue, paradigms in research and treatment approaches need to change to improve earlier cancer detection and identify better biomarkers for treatment stratification.

Belinda’s PhD explored the integration of a registry-based translational research pathway and parallel multi-omics analyses to identify novel blood-based biomarkers in pancreatic cancer. Belinda’s research has created a large fully annotated pancreatic cancer dataset and registry that is invaluable.

The results presented proved a comprehensive characterisation of the systemic immune and protein profile in pancreatic cancer, and relationship with patient outcomes. This work in systemic biomarkers provides crucial insight to determine barriers and resistance mechanisms, define optimal selection criteria for treatments and inform future therapeutic design.
