Dr Shabih Shakeel is a Laboratory Head in the Molecular Sciences Division at WEHI and an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology at the University of Melbourne. He trained in structural biology with Prof Sarah Butcher at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and Dr Lori Passmore at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, before establishing his laboratory at WEHI in 2021. His laboratory combines structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics and single-molecule approaches to understand how large and dynamic molecular machines regulate chromatin, genome stability and human disease.

A major focus of his research is uncovering the molecular mechanisms that control epigenetic repression and determining how these processes might be exploited therapeutically in cancer. In this seminar, Shabih will discuss recent discoveries from his laboratory in chromatin regulation and how these are shaping new approaches to identify therapeutic vulnerabilities. He will also highlight the laboratory’s parallel efforts to develop new cryo-electron microscopy technologies that address longstanding challenges in sample preparation and image analysis, enabling increasingly complex and dynamic biological systems to be studied at molecular resolution.
