International PhD Scholar Initiative

Enabling outstanding international students to join our Medical Biology PhD Program.

Applications for the 2025 intake of the International PhD Scholar Initiative have now closed.

The International PhD Scholar Initiative recruits candidates from outside of Australia to come to WEHI to undertake their PhD research. International PhD Scholars are selected on the basis of their academic record, relevant experience, referees’ reports and a videoconference interview.

International PhD scholarships

WEHI offers a number of dedicated scholarships to support International PhD Scholars.

Our International PhD Scholarships provide a living allowance equivalent to the current Melbourne Research Scholarship rate and a WEHI PhD top-up scholarship totalling $42,137pa.

In addition, the international PhD student will receive a relocation allowance if located outside Victoria (up to $3,000), health insurance coverage, and a university tuition fee offset.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the International PhD Scholar Initiative applicants must meet the following academic requirements:

  • Have completed their four-year undergraduate degree (with a substantial research component) or masters degree at an international university

or

  • Be in the final academic year of their current degree or due to complete in first semester of 2025.

This initiative is for applicants who will be enrolled as an international student in Australia.

Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens qualify as domestic students with University of Melbourne and are not eligible to apply for the International PhD Scholar Initiative.

If your last degree of study was at an Australian university, you are also not eligible for the International PhD Scholar Initiative. These international students should seek other scholarship options available.

Testimonials

Sara Berent, Allan Lab

My PhD journey has been incredibly rewarding, with lots of freedom and support to explore new lab techniques, develop a broad range of skills, and deepen my understanding of various biology topics.

My lab’s culture offers a great work-life balance, and the institute has all the facilities you would expect of somewhere of the calibre of WEHI. I do a lot of flow cytometry, proteomics and sequencing and have all of the expertise and facilities I could possibly need.”

“I feel very honoured to be a recipient of the IPSI scholarship in 2024. It has been a huge support for me in many ways I had not imagined.

Coming all the way from Germany and being trained in biochemistry and biophysics, I was hoping to come to WEHI as I believe that the best science happens at the intersection between fields.

This opportunity will not only enrich my educational experience but also display an enormous expression of faith in my own potential, an encouragement to do well with my studies and fully commit to my chosen vocation.”

“Thanks to the International PhD Scholarship Initiative, I gained the valuable opportunity to study at WEHI.

I enjoy the diverse, collaborative and innovative culture here. I feel enthusiastic and motivated to do research in such an encouraging atmosphere. Moreover, this scholarship brings more and more talented students who are passionate for science to WEHI.

It is exciting to build connections with them and be inspired by them as part of my PhD journey.”
