The Ring of Fire

Created | 2025

HeLa cells are widely used in research. This line of “immortal” human cancer cells, that can grow and divide indefinitely in the lab, are incredibly valuable for studying diseases and testing new treatments.

This image shows a HeLa cell that is beginning to die. It is the first electron microscopy image taken by PhD student Ria of a cell culture that she developed; a milestone in her research career.

After honing her imaging techniques on HeLa cells, Ria is now applying the lessons learned to her research in Parkinson’s disease.

Her project is one of the first to investigate brain cells in Parkinson’s disease in a 3D context. Through her work, she hopes to unravel some of the many mysteries behind this complex neurological condition.
