Into the Woods
Like an etching of an overgrown forest in a fairytale, this image captured by postdoctoral researcher Sabrina reveals the intricate network of blood vessels in the lung.
These blood vessels play a crucial role in transporting oxygen and nutrients, but they can also carry cancer.
Scientists are studying these vessels to understand how breast cancer cells spread, or metastasise, to the lungs. By tracking cancer cell movement, researchers can uncover how the disease progresses.
More than 20,000 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, with one-in-seven women diagnosed in their lifetimes.
WEHI researchers aim to provide new insights into the mechanisms of metastasis, which they hope leads to more targeted therapies and better outcomes, for people affected by breast cancer.
