p53 Tumour Suppressor
Our bodies’ cells and tissues are under constant stress from the environment.
The protein p53 plays a central role in determining whether a damaged cell lives or dies. As a result, p53 keeps cells healthy and our bodies cancer free. Strikingly, half of all human cancers have p53 switched off.
This animation demonstrates how p53 turns genes “on” to drive processes that control the fate of a damaged cell.
