Ubiquitin and Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a destructive neurological condition of the brain. Decoration of mitochondria (compartments or ‘organelles’ within cells) with ubiquitin normally signals for this organelle’s destruction so that it can be replaced. Disruption of this process can cause early onset Parkinson’s disease.

The animation illustrates the role of ubiquitin in controlling the fate and activity of other proteins and its involvement in Parkinson’s disease.
