About

Ian Wishart is the Chief Operating Officer at WEHI, bringing more than 25 years’ experience leading complex, purpose-driven organisations across health and international development. Throughout his career, he has been motivated by work that delivers real and lasting benefit to people’s lives.

At WEHI, Ian leads a diverse portfolio of functions that support and amplify the Institute’s scientific mission, including philanthropy, research grants and major bids, engagement and communications, information technology and strategic growth initiatives. His focus is on ensuring these teams work together in a joined-up way, so that WEHI’s researchers are well supported, opportunities are pursued effectively, and the organisation is positioned for long-term success.

Ian’s role sits at the intersection of strategy, operations and external engagement. He works closely with the Director, Board, senior scientists and professional leaders to translate WEHI’s strategy into clear priorities, strong systems and practical outcomes. He is particularly interested in building alignment across functions, strengthening performance and decision-making, and leading transformation that helps the Institute grow its impact, capability and reputation.

Before joining WEHI, Ian served as Chief Executive Officer of The Fred Hollows Foundation and held other senior leadership roles in Australia and internationally. He has extensive experience working with governments, funders, partners and Boards, and is comfortable representing organisations in complex environments.

Ian is strongly aligned with WEHI’s purpose and values. He believes that great science depends not only on discovery, but on collaboration, trust and well-designed systems that enable people to do their best work.
