International neuro‑oncology leader to join WEHI

28 April 2026

Internationally renowned neuro‑oncologist Professor David Ashley will join WEHI as a laboratory head, advancing the ambitious research agenda of The Brain Cancer Centre.

As the incoming CEO of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) Alliance, Prof Ashley brings a uniquely integrated perspective across research and clinical care.

Through this fractional appointment, he will pursue his innovative brain cancer research at WEHI, while his leadership through the VCCC Alliance bolsters statewide cancer collaboration.

Enhancing collaborative research efforts

Globally recognised for his pioneering advances in immuno‑oncology, Prof Ashley has helped shape new immunotherapy approaches for both paediatric and adult brain tumours and driven the translation of fundamental discoveries into early phase clinical trials.

His new appointment at WEHI enhances the institute’s contribution to the VCCC Alliance, building even stronger collaboration to advance research, innovation and patient care across the state.

Professor Ken Smith, WEHI director, said Prof Ashley’s exceptional neuro‑oncology expertise and global perspective would help advance collective efforts to improve outcomes for people with brain cancer.

“David brings deep clinical understanding and proven research leadership that will sharpen our focus and accelerate progress in one of the toughest areas of cancer research,” Prof Smith said.

“His appointment strengthens our partnerships across the Alliance and reinforces our commitment to discovery and translation that makes a meaningful difference for patients and their families.”

The Brain Cancer Centre CEO Sam McGuane welcomed the appointment.

“Having led some of the world’s most advanced neuro‑oncology programs, David’s insights will enrich our collaborative model and expand our ability to unite scientists, clinicians and partners in tackling brain cancer together,” he said.

“At The Brain Cancer Centre, our vision is that one day no lives are lost to brain cancer. We’re excited to welcome David to the team, helping drive the research progress needed to turn that vision into reality.”

Driving innovation in immuno-oncology

Prof Ashley’s two‑decade career in cancer research has centred on paediatric and adult neuro‑oncology, integrating fundamental science with translational studies to advance treatment for neurological tumours.

He is widely recognised for his contributions to immuno‑oncology, including the development and clinical evaluation of dendritic cell vaccines and other novel immunotherapies.

As principal investigator on numerous national and international clinical and preclinical studies, his research has helped to shape contemporary standards of care.

Prof Ashley is returning to Melbourne after eight years as Director of The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, at Duke University Medical Centre, North Carolina in the USA.

“Joining WEHI and The Brain Cancer Centre is an exciting opportunity to help drive research that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in brain cancer,” Prof Ashley said.

“The scientific depth and dedication of the teams here, combined with a strong collaborative culture, creates a powerful environment for advancing research that can deliver transformative outcomes for people with brain cancer.”

Global leadership in brain cancer

An Australian-trained paediatric and adult neuro-oncologist, Prof Ashley was Founding Director of the Children’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), served as Chair of Medicine at Deakin University, and was Executive Director of the Western Alliance Academic Health Science Centre, where he integrated research and education across multiple health services.

As Director of the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, he has overseen one of the world’s largest brain tumour programs, combining clinical excellence with cutting-edge research, philanthropy and data-driven innovation. He also held the dual appointment of Director of Paediatric Neuro-oncology.

Prof Ashley will join The Brain Cancer Centre and commence as a laboratory head in WEHI’s Personalised Oncology division in May 2026.

Founded by Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation and established in partnership with WEHI with support from the Victorian Government, The Brain Cancer Centre’s 17 collaborating partners include hospitals, medical research institutes and universities across Australia.
