Art of Science brings together Melbourne’s best

Introduction

WEHI’s 2021 Art of Science exhibition went off with a bang, thanks to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s percussionists.

The popular exhibition moved online this year and, in a true collaboration between art and science, is accompanied by a recording of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO).

An annual favourite

WEHI has been running the Art of Science competition for more than two decades. The images highlight the beauty behind medical research, with images created using WEHI’s state-of-the-art imaging facilities. All entries were captured as part of the work done by WEHI researchers seeking answers to some of the world’s most complex health problems, including cancers, immune disorders and infectious diseases, and healthy ageing and development.

The finalists from the 2021 Art of Science competition are displayed online and this year’s guest judge was Lisa Gorman, creative director and founder of Melbourne fashion icon Gorman.

Before founding Gorman, Lisa spent her early career working as a nurse at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, and brought her passion for science and flair for design to her judging role.

“I’ve had a longstanding fascination with human biology since my high school days, which led me to complete a nursing degree and then to work at The Royal Melbourne Hospital in the 1990s. There were so many magnificent, interesting and alluring works to choose from.”

Celebrating Melbourne

WEHI Director Professor Doug Hilton AO said that working with Lisa Gorman and the MSO aligned the best of Melbourne: biomedical research, fashion and the arts.

“It’s wonderful to be able to collaborate in this way and, by holding the exhibition online this year, we hope more people will be able to enjoy these rarely accessible and captivating images.”
