Uncovering biological mechanisms via real-time single-molecule and single-cell analysis

Abstract

Imagine watching individual proteins bind to DNA or RNA in real time, manipulating a single protein to probe its conformational landscape, or applying force to a cell while monitoring its mechanical and biochemical responses.

The LUMICKS C-Trap makes this possible by combining optical tweezers, fluorescence imaging, and microfluidics into one platform. It enables real-time observation, control, and manipulation of biological processes across scales—from single molecules to whole cells—providing dynamic insights into complex mechanisms.

We will showcase how this correlative technology transforms research on DNA-binding enzymes, protein dynamics, biomolecular condensates, membrane remodeling, and cell mechanobiology. Finally, we highlight how advanced single-molecule methods are now accessible in a robust, user-friendly instrument that opens new avenues across the life sciences.

Speaker bio

Vincenzo, originally from Italy and now based in Amsterdam, earned his Chemistry degree from the University of Pisa and a PhD in Biophysics from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2020), where he studied photosynthetic light harvesting in plants, algae, and bacteria.

Since 2021, he has been an Application Scientist at LUMICKS, helping researchers adopt single-molecule technologies across Europe, and is now working to expand LUMICKS’ presence and collaborations in Australia.
