Professor Visweswariah obtained her bachelor’s degree in Botany from Osmania University, Hyderabad, in 1977, following which she joined IIT Kanpur to pursue her master’s in Chemistry. In 1980, she started her PhD program in the Department of Biochemistry, IISc, and completed it in 1987. From 1987 to 1993, she worked at Astra Research Centre, Bangalore, as a postdoctoral fellow and later as a scientist. In 1993, she joined academics and took up a position of an assistant professor at the Department of Development and Genetics, IISc, where she served as a professor and chairperson. She is currently an Honorary Professor in the same department. She is a recipient of numerous fellowships including the a short term Fellowship from the Human Frontier Science Programme (HFSP) held at the University of California, Berkeley in the laboratory of Prof. John Kuriyan (2002); Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Fellowship, 2011-2012, spent at the lab of Dr Sabine Ehrt, Weill Cornell Medical College, New York City, US; and was awarded a Royal Society Collaborative Grant for Research Professors held with Prof. Gad Frankel at Imperial College London (2017-2023). She was a Provost’s Visiting Professor at Imperial College, London from 2023-2024, and she is currently an Honorary Visiting Professor in the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College London. She receives funding from the Department of Biotechnology-Wellcome Trust India Alliance and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH, USA.
