Professor Kalle Gehring trained at the University of California at Berkeley (PhD, Microbiology) and, as a postdoctoral fellow at the Ecole Polytechnique in France where he discovered a cytosine-based four-stranded DNA structure. At McGill University in Montreal, Canada, his research group works on parkin, a ubiquitin ligase that protects against Parkinson’s disease. Recent studies discovered a class of small molecules that activate parkin without phosphorylation by acting as molecular glues. The compounds provide the basis for the design of first therapeutics to slow disease progression by enhancing parkin activity. The Gehring laboratory also works on a recently discovered signalling pathway involving cysteine phosphorylation and has been active leading grants for equipment and training in structural biology and biophysics.
