Marking mitochondria: Ubiquitin regulation of mitochondrial function

Keeping mitochondria healthy depends on tight quality control, and ubiquitination has emerged as a central mechanism governing mitochondrial dynamics, protein import into mitochondria, mitophagy, and stress responses. In this seminar I will discuss how ubiquitin writers (E3 ligases), erasers (deubiquitinases) and a special ubiquitin modifier (PINK1) mark mitochondria for degradation or repair. This system of ubiquitin control offers an attractive therapeutic strategy for modulating mitochondrial function. In line with this, I will discuss some examples in which the ubiquitin system is being harnessed to treat neurodegenerative disease.

 

Dr Sylvie Callegari, is a recently appointed lab head in the Molecular Sciences division at WEHI. Her lab focusses on understanding the ubiquitin machinery that regulates mitochondrial function with the aim to uncover new therapeutic strategies for Parkinson’s disease and other mitochondrial disorders
