Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a common yet under-recognised form of dementia in older people. Timely and accurate diagnosis remains difficult as there are no validated diagnostic tests. Heterogenous clinical features and high prevalence of cerebral co-pathology in DLB, particularly relating to Alzheimer’s disease (AD), neuroinflammation and cerebrovascular disease, adds to the challenges. Once a diagnosis is made, the future disease trajectory remains uncertain and there are no disease-modifying treatments available. Recent developments in blood biomarker technology to aid in diagnosis and management of people with dementia is an exciting prospect to address these issues, with several on the verge of clinical translation. My PhD investigated blood biomarkers of neurodegeneration, AD co-pathology and inflammation people with DLB.
