Are you ready to embrace the exponentials and pretend the code no longer exists?
“Vibe coding”, Collins Dictionary’s word of 2025, has fundamentally changed software development – making it possible for people with little coding ability to build real world applications.
This seminar provides a high-level overview of vibe coding for medical researchers, bioinformaticians and software developers working in research environments. We will explore applications of vibe coding in medical research, how to get started, and where the hype breaks down. The session will also cover key limitations, including privacy, security, and reliability.
Daniel Brown is a postdoctoral researcher at WEHI. An experimentalist and self-taught coder, he has worked in the field of genomics and bioinformatics for the past ten years. The recent emergence of vibe coding has enabled him to extend his interests into AI and synthetic biology.
Richard McGrath is the Principal Software Architect and Manager of the Application Development team at WEHI. He has over 20 years’ experience in software development and is the principal developer of WEHI’s Animal Management System (AMS), as well as the designer and developer of many other Institute applications. Over the past 18 months, AI-assisted coding has become a core part of his daily workflow, reshaping how software is designed, built, and maintained.
