Prostate cancer is the most common non-cutaneous malignancy in Australian men. The therapeutic landscape of advanced prostate cancer has dramatically changed in recent years following the development and approval of several life-prolonging treatments. A significant challenge however, is the extrapolation of clinical trial data to real world clinical practice, particularly when treating under-represented populations including older patients and those with multiple comorbidities. The collection of real-world data is therefore vital to further understand treatment patterns, outcomes and answer important clinical questions.

Arsha’s PhD focused on the use of clinical registries to evaluate real world treatment patterns and outcomes in advanced prostate cancer. Using the electronic Prostate Cancer Australian Database (ePAD), valuable insights into real world practice were gained and the database was also leveraged to conduct a randomised prospective registry based trial. The results of this novel trial methodology and further exploration of patient and clinician perspectives will help to optimise future trial designs with an aim to ultimately improve patient care.
