Associate Professor Claire Shepherd is Director of the Sydney Brain Bank and leads the Shepherd Dementia Research Laboratory at Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA). She is a research neuropathologist specialising in ageing and neurodegeneration, with a research program focused on understanding disease mechanisms using well-characterised postmortem human brain tissue.

Her research spans cerebrovascular dysfunction, protein aggregation, and the neuropathological consequences of repetitive head impacts. Her work integrates neuropathology with clinical, neuroimaging, genetic, and environmental research to investigate mechanisms of neurodegeneration and clinicopathological relationships. In particular, her research has identified region- and cell-specific vulnerabilities in neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

As Director of the Sydney Brain Bank, Associate Professor Shepherd leads an internationally recognised resource that has supported more than 500 publications and facilitates collaborative clinicopathological research across Australia and internationally. She trained in neuroscience at the University of Sheffield in the UK and maintains extensive international collaborations in human brain research. She was the inaugural recipient of the Franz Nissl Young Investigator Award in recognition of her contribution to neuropathological research.
