How to apply for Honours

Course structure

WEHI offers the Honours course as the Department of Medical Biology, University of Melbourne. Start of year (semester one) and mid year (semester two) intakes are offered.  Learn more about the details of the course structure.

The Honours course consists of a research component and coursework component. The research component is the most significant aspect of the course, therefore it is important to find a research project that you are passionate to pursue.

How to apply

To be accepted as an Honours student at WEHI you must complete two application parts.

Part A: Application to WEHI

All prospective students first need to identify their preferred student research project, discuss it with the prospective supervisor and reach an agreement with a supervisor. Contact with a supervisor can be made via email and video chat in the first instance, and then meeting in-person.

You should provide prospective supervisors with:

  • Your curriculum vitae (CV)

  • A cover letter outlining your research interests

  • Your academic transcripts (at this stage unofficial transcripts are acceptable)

Upon agreement of a project with a supervisor, an application needs to be made to WEHI. Email your CV, academic transcript and name of your supervisors to:
WEHI Scientific Education Office, education@wehi.edu.au 

You must complete Part A (above) before proceeding to Part B.

Part B: Application to the University of Melbourne

All prospective students need to lodge an application online for Bachelor of Science (Honours) or Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) via the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences (MDHS). An information session webinar is available online.

Step 1: This is achieved by completing your application to WEHI (Part A, see above).

Step 2: Apply online for 

  • Start of year intake: Lodge application by 9 November 2022. Select your project preferences in Sonia before 18 November 2022.

Find WEHI Honours projects in Sonia by:

  • Name: either project title or supervisor
  • Department: Medical Biology (WEHI)

Round 2 Honours applications

Students may lodge Round 2 applications in January 2023, but it is important to get in touch with us first. It is essential you have completed Part A (application to WEHI, see above) prior to the University of Melbourne application.
