Restriction of platelet life span by intrinsic apoptosis is pivotal to maintain a functional, hemostatically reactive platelet population (Pleines, Blood 2018 132(2):197). The recent study above identified long-lived Bak/Bax deficient platelets to have a reduced ability to respond to increased bioenergetic demand. This project will further identify functional differences between young and old platelets. 

About our research group

Our laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular pathways that regulate platelet production and function in health and disease. We previously characterised the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic machinery in megakaryocytes (Josefsson, Nat Commun 2014 5(3455), Josefsson, J Exp Med 2011 208(10):2017) where we identified the selective pro-survival proteins (Bcl-xL and Mcl-1) as essential for keeping megakaryocytes alive and discovered that the apoptotic death machinery can be triggered by chemotherapy treatment and by viral infection. 

Another interest in our laboratory lies in better understanding the role of platelets in cancer progression (Hyslop, Sci Rep. 2017 7(1):14953).
