The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research is aware that the University of California, Berkeley has concluded its process with respect to allegations regarding Professor Terry Speed, during his employment at Berkeley.
Professor Speed has informed the Institute that the University of California, Berkeley has made no finding on the matter. Professor Speed has advised that he is resigning his Emeritus Professor role at the University of California, Berkeley.
While the Institute was not party to the Berkeley process and acknowledges there has been no finding, we consider it to be a serious matter. We are concerned about the wellbeing of all those directly involved, including the complainants, and we are conscious that this has impacted many people both directly and indirectly.
The Institute has not received any complaints regarding Professor Speed during his 21 years at the Institute, including none from the complainants in the Berkeley matter. Professor Speed will retain his honorary appointment at the Institute.
Providing a safe and respectful workplace is of the utmost importance and we want our Institute to be a place where women and men flourish equally in a supportive environment.

The Institute is not involved in this investigation process and will not be commenting while the process is underway.
The Institute has not received any allegations regarding Professor Speed while an employee at the Institute.
Professor Speed retains an honorary appointment at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.
