About the position

An exciting opportunity exists for a Research Officer (Chemist) to join the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. We are seeking a highly motivated medicinal chemist with a strong work ethic, excellent attention to detail and an ability to solve problems. Your primary responsibilities will be to design and synthesise novel compounds and engage with other scientists to advance drug discovery projects at the Institute. This will be a laboratory-based role, principally at our Bundoora Campus, reporting to the Head of the National Drug Discovery Centre.

The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with a broad range of scientists at the Institute, providing medicinal chemistry expertise and capability. Other responsibilities may include the oversight of CRO chemists, interpretation of assay data and structure-activity relationships, assisting with the preparation of patents and journal manuscripts, and providing advice and assistance on hits that arise from HTS campaigns.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should possess a PhD in chemistry (or equivalent experience) and a demonstrated ability to synthesise organic compounds on a milligram to multi-gram scale in a medicinal chemistry setting. Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with scientists from a wide range of scientific backgrounds are essential. The successful applicant will be capable of working independently to devise time- and cost-efficient synthetic routes and will have an excellent understanding of the drug discovery process. Previous experience in a commercial or academic drug discovery setting would be highly regarded.
