The Barwon Infant Study – integrating basic science and epidemiology

Special seminar hosted by Professor Len Harrison

The Barwon Infant Study (BIS) is a population-derived pre-birth cohort study (n =1074 infants) incorporating longitudinal assembly of comprehensive biological samples in combination with detailed physiological and clinical phenotyping. The broad objectives are to investigate the role of specific environmental factors, gut microbiota and epigenetic variation in early-life development, and subsequent immune, allergic, cardiovascular, respiratory and neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Peter Vuillermin is the Chair of Medicine at Deakin University and Director of Research at Barwon Health. His talk will discuss the findings from BIS to date, future directions and the challenge of integrating basic science and epidemiology.
