An excellent opportunity short term opportunity exists for a Research Assistant to join the Population Health and Immunity Division. As this is a short-term opportunity (approximately 6 months with a potential for renewal), the structure of the role is incredibly flexible. We would consider applications for those interested in a Research Assistant role on a full-time or casual basis. We would also be open to a secondment arrangement if suitable. The role is available immediately.

About the position

The Jex lab plays a key role in confirming test results for wastewater surveillance for the SARS-CoV-2 virus as part of Victoria’s COVID response plan run through the Department of Health and Human Services. The primary routine testing is undertaken by a NATA-accredited commercial third-party using a commercial RT-qPCR test. We verify these tests results through amplicon sequencing and CRISPr-based identification of the amplicon ensuring it matches the target locus for SARS-CoV-2. We also undertake independent verification of the positive result using a digital droplet PCR method. The successful applicant will take over this routine confirmation work under guidance of two experienced post-docs. Sample handling is limited to amplicons and cDNA provided by the commercial service and does not include handling of any infectious material. Each method is well established in the Jex lab and the protocols have been used routinely for the last 6-10 months. Additional opportunities will be available to develop skills in genotyping and whole genome sequencing as these methods are developed or implemented by other members of the Jex lab.

Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will have:

  • Basic skills for routine wet lab practices

  • Prior experience in PCR and handing nucleic acids

Additional skills in digital droplet PCR, the preparation of next-generation sequencing libraries, sequence analysis or primer design or RT-qPCR are appreciated but not required.
