Stem cells in thymus development and ageing

Postgraduate lecture series

Together with other stromal elements, a dynamic network of epithelial cells orchestrates the recruitment, differentiation and education of T cell precursors in the thymus. However, at a relatively young age the thymus begins a progressive atrophy, termed involution, which greatly reduces thymic output and contributes to diminished adaptive immune responses in later life. Understanding the fundamental processes that underpin thymus development, maintenance and involution is an important step towards protecting or boosting thymus function for clinical advantage.

In this seminar, Julie will summarise the current knowledge of thymus stem/progenitor cells and explore hypotheses and research that will inform our future understanding of the cellular behaviours that contribute to the development and decline of thymus function.
