Disruptive approaches to improving cancer treatment and outcomes

This event has been cancelled

Wednesday seminar hosted by Associate Professor Marie-Liesse Labat

Progress in cancer therapeutic development has been frustratingly slow. The focus remains on developing new agents, typically aiming for small incremental gains, with few studies designed to optimise the use of available and emerging treatment options. Studies that better define which patients should be treated or which of a range of available treatment approaches are most likely to be successful have largely been neglected, for a range of reasons.

Professor Gibbs is a Laboratory Head and Joint Division Head in the Personalised Oncology division. His lab has been leading several world first efforts in co-ordinating national trial activity. These include multiple studies of circulating tumour DNA to guide chemotherapy in early colorectal cancer (now being the first group to ever complete enrolment to a biomarker focused study in colorectal cancer), initiating multiple registry randomised trials (a novel concept in cancer research) and being about to commence a study of organoid informed treatment selection for patients with advanced colorectal cancer (to our knowledge the first in the world).
