Information for users of the cytometers

Analysers

The analytical cytometers are available for user-operation at all hours.  Reserving time is instantaneous. Go to the online scheduler and click on the time required. An internal phone number and cost centre code are required. Reservations may be cancelled more than 24 hours in advance without penalty.  If instrument failure causes the cancellation of an operation, see Cytometry Facility staff to have the charges waived.  To report after hours failures, email the facility at the address posted on each instrument.

A series of practical tutorials on cytometer operation are conducted at the start of each year but may be arranged for small groups at later times.

Rules for DIY Cytometer Use

  • Enter your name on the schedule before using the cytometer.
  • If you use the cytometer you are responsible for shutting it down. DON'T JUST WALK AWAY AND LEAVE IT RUNNING.
  • Only if you can talk to the next scheduled user in person, and they confirm they are coming, may you leave the cytometer running (less than 3 hrs in "standby" mode).
  • If your name is on the cytometer schedule you are responsible for shutting the cytometer down.
  • If you run biohazardous material in the cytometer, you must thoroughly decontaminate before leaving.
  • If you allow the cytometer to run dry of saline, you are responsible for removing air bubbles from the saline lines.
  • If you leave data on the cytometer's local hard disk, expect it to be gone when you return.

Instruments Funded by the Australian Cancer Research Foundation

Acquisition of the LSR II - C cytometer was funded by an ACRF grant that established the ACRF Centre for Therapeutic Target Discovery. This centre included participation from the following WEHI principal investigators, together with others from neighbouring institutions:
Lindeman
Strasser
Alexander
Hilton
Huang
Roberts
Speed
Visvader

Access is allowed for those outside the ACRF centre but is prioritized as follows:

  1. Members of the principal investigator laboratories can place bookings on a Monday up to three weeks prior to analysis week.
  2. Other cancer researchers can place bookings on a Monday up to two weeks prior to analysis week.
  3. Other researchers can place bookings on a Monday up to one week prior to analysis week.

Once any booking is made in accordance with these principles, it will only be cancelled by the user or because of instrument failure.
