Why did you choose the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for your Honours year?
I chose the institute because my current project attracted me. The organisation also attracted me for its world-class training and facilities, strong mentorship and advanced projects.
The institute also has a strong history in science excellence.
What do you see as the benefits of doing Honours at the institute?
The benefits include excellent mentorship and intellectually stimulating projects. As students we are able to come close to experts from different fields of research.
The institute also has great support systems from various departments such as the purchasing departments, central services and student association.
Have there been any highlights?
The student association, WESA, holds many wonderful social events such as the student retreat and occasional BBQs or morning teas that provide great opportunities to mingle. WESA also organises inter-departmental soccer games for the students.
What is the subject of your Honours research?
I’m developing compounds that may be used to treat multiple sclerosis.
What does a typical working day involve?
Reviewing the experimental plans for the day, jumping into some bench work such as cell culturing, followed by quick discussion with my supervisors about experimental results or the plan for next day or two. And enjoying a good tea break with friends and colleagues.
What did you study at uni?
Bachelor of Biomedical Science with a major in pharmacology.
