Application process: international students

There are two ways that you can apply to study at the Institute as an international student:

1. Apply for general consideration by the Institute

International students may apply to the Institute for placement in an available PhD position in their area of research interest.

Students will be selected on the basis of their academic record, relevant experience and a videoconference interview, before being connected with potential supervisors in their area of interest.

  1. Investigate the current student project opportunities to identify your preferred research areas.

  2. Apply to the Institute by submitting your academic transcript; your curriculum vitae; and a cover letter that explains your research interests and the titles of 3 to 5 student projects and/or Institute supervisors that interest you. Please email these to studentapplications@wehi.edu.au
    Application deadline: 1 December 2016

  3. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a videoconference interview in February 2017.

  4. Successful applicants will be advised of available supervisors by March 2017, and asked to discuss their interest in specific research projects with these supervisors. At this stage supervisors will advise whether internal scholarship funding is available.

  5. Students are to complete the University of Melbourne RHD online application for admission and scholarship. As part of this process you will need to have agreed on a potential research project with your supervisor.
Closing date for scholarship application: 31 October (to commence in semester one) or 26 May (to commence in semester two).

A limited number of laboratory-funded scholarships are available for outstanding applicants until an external scholarship is attained. PhD scholarships provide a living stipend (at least $26,288 in 2016) and cover some research costs.
