Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre

Victoria the place to be logoPremier John Brumby and Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon announced in May 2009 that a $1 billion world-class cancer centre will be built in the inner Melbourne suburb of Parkville. Construction will commence in 2011 and will be completed by 2015.

The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (Victorian CCC) will see the next generation of advances in the prevention, detection and treatment of cancer. The centre will:

  • speed up the discovery of new treatments
  • attract the nation’s leading cancer researchers
  • provide a centre of excellence for people affected by cancer.

The project has two components: the powerful alliance of leading clinical and research organisations in the form of a Joint Venture and the development of a new facility.

The members in the Parkville CCC are:

  • Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
  • Melbourne Health (which includes the Royal Melbourne Hospital)
  • The University of Melbourne
  • Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research
  • The Royal Women’s Hospital
  • Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, and
  • The Royal Children’s Hospital, on behalf of the three RCH campus partners.

The new facilities will accommodate up to 1400 researchers within the Victorian CCC buildings. This is close to twice the number of current cancer researchers working across the centre’s seven partner organisations. The new facilities will include:

  • 196 inpatient beds
  • 110 same-day treatment places
  • eight medi-hotel beds
  • more than 30,000 square metres of specialised research facilities
  • clinical trials facility with 24 treatment places
  • education and training facilities
  • outpatient clinic and treatment facilities
  • eight radiation therapy bunkers, and
  • a 700+ space car park.
