How do I get to the WEHI Biotechnology Centre from Melbourne city centre?
1) Take a Bus
The route 250, 340 and 350 buses from the city (for instance from corner Elizabeth and Flinders Sts), travel to La Trobe University and terminate at the main bus station within La Trobe University. Each service runs at 20 to 30 minute intervals depending upon time of day. The travel time is from over an hour for service 250 (stops all stops and travels suburban streets) to about 48 minutes for the service 350 which runs partly express and includes a section of freeway running. Service 340 includes a section of express freeway running but otherwise stops all stops.
Alight from the bus at the first stop inside the University campus just past the intersection of Waterdale Rd and Kingsbury Drive. Then cross Waterdale Rd and walk towards the roundabout just north of the bus stop. Then turn right and walk in an easterly direction along the Ring Rd until the next roundabout, and then turn right into Research Drive. Walk almost to the end of Research Drive (past Park Drive on your left) and you will find the WEHI Biotechnology Centre on your left.
2) Take a Tram
Take the number 86 Tram (Bundoora-RMIT)) from Bourke Street in the city. Get off at the La Trobe University stop #60 (usually announced as "La Trobe University". This stop is at the intersection of Plenty Rd and Kingsbury Drive. Then it is about a 1.5km walk across campus in a south-easterly direction to the WEHI Biotechnology on the opposite side of the campus. During daylight hours Monday to Friday, there is a free campus bus that runs every 30mins. Stop #1 for this bus is in Kingsbury Drive near the Plenty Rd tram stop. Bus stop #5 is at the Victorian Agribiosciences Centre in Park Drive almost next door to the WEHI Biotechnology Centre. The tram trip from the city to La trobe University takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic, time of day etc.
3) Take a Taxi
The WEHI Biotechnology Centre is about a 40 plus minute taxi trip from the central business district, and generally costs about $40, depending on traffic, time of day etc. You would be wise to advise the driver to enter the La Trobe University Campus via Waterdale Rd, and then guide the driver to the WEHI Biotechnology Centre following the walking instructions for bus passengers above.
4) Take a Train
Take the Hurstbridge line train from any of the city Loop stations, and alight at Macleod station. The trains run at 8 to 20 minute intervals during the day Monday to Friday, and the trip takes from about 30 to 40 minutes depending on the level of express running. Once at Macleod, it is then about a 1.5km walk to the WEHI Biotechnology Centre in a westerly direction. Take Macleod Parade immediately outside the station, and walk its length to Ruthven St. Turn right into Ruthven St and it will become Kingsbury Drive once it crosses Waiora Rd. Travel down Kingsbury Drive until Waterdale Rd and then follow the bus passengers' instructions above.
How do I get to the WEHI Biotechnology Centre from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport?
Your only option is to take a taxi. The WEHI Biotechnology Centre is about a 30 minute taxi trip from Melbourne Airport, and generally costs around $50, depending on traffic, time of day etc.
Public transport options are not practical. It would involve about 2 hours travelling via the city, or bus hopping across the northern suburbs.
