How do I get to the WEHI from the City?

1) Take a Tram

Trams run about every 6 to 8 minutes during office hours Monday to Friday. The trip from the City to WEHI takes around 10 minutes, depending on traffic, time of day etc.
  • Take the number 19 Tram (North Coburg) from Elizabeth Street.

    • Get off at the Melbourne University Stop (usually announced as "Melbourne University, Royal Melbourne Private Hospital". This is the first stop after the Royal Melbourne Hospital & Dental Hospital Stop on Grattan St.).
    • Cross the road towards the hospital.
    • Walk down the driveway between the Royal Melbourne Private Hospital and University High School (the grass oval you can see) - The Walter & Eliza Hall Institute is the Blue & Red(ish) building in front of you.
    • Walk across the courtyard to Reception.
  • Take the number 59 Tram (Airport West) from Elizabeth Street

    • Get off at the Royal Melbourne Hospital Stop. This is the first stop after the tram turns in to Flemington Road (corner of Flemington Road and Grattan Street)
    • Cross the road towards the Royal Melbourne Hospital (not the Dental Hospital).
    • You can then either walk around the block until you reach Royal Melbourne Private Hospital (see directions for the number 19 Tram above) or you can go through the hospital. From the Grattan Street entrance of the hospital, the WEHI is on the far side of the main hospital building.

2) Take a Bus

Buses run about every 10 minutes during office hours Monday to Friday.
  • Take the Route 402 Bus from the terminus opposite St. Vincent's Hospital in Victoria Parade (or further along route)

Note: this service does not begin in the City Centre, you should walk to the top of Spring Street or up Exhibition Street to Rathdowne Street to catch this bus.

    • Get off at the Royal Melbourne Hospital - one of the major stops for this bus. If you're unsure, ask the driver. You will be dropped off at the corner of Flemington Road and Grattan Street.

3) Take a Taxi

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is about a 10 minute taxi trip from the CBD, and generally costs $6 to $8, depending on traffic, time of day etc.

4) Take a Hike

  • From the city, the WEHI is about a 15 to 20 minute walk (around 1.7 km) up Elizabeth Street. Simply head up Elizabeth Street, then past the Haymarket roundabout (the one with the Giant Flag pole in the middle of it) and into Royal Parade. If you feel you're getting lost, follow the Tram lines - or jump on a tram - both the 19 and the 59 will run past you up Elizabeth Street.
  • Once you cross Grattan Street, it's about 300m on the left (see instructions for the number 19 Tram once you get to this point).

How do I get to the WEHI from the Airport?

1) Take a Taxi

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute is about a 30 minute taxi trip from Melbourne Airport, and generally costs around $30, depending on traffic, time of day etc.

2) Take a Bus
